About

The Rutland County Energy Challenge is a collaborative effort among a number of organizations, communities, and individuals committed to seeing Rutland County lead Vermont and the nation in energy solutions.

The Challenge’s purpose is to:
  • reduce the costs of energy use through efficiency and conservation,
  • increase use of renewable forms of energy,
  • and serve as a model for the rest of Vermont and the country.
The 2010 challenge was to increase residential energy savings by 10% over the savings reported in 2009 through a direct expansion of energy efficiency efforts across the county. Over these 12 months, energy efficiency measures saved Rutland County homeowners more than $2,000,000.

The 2011 goal expands on 2010's success, focusing on improving efficiency at small businesses and municipalities by weatherizing buildings and upgrading outdoor lighting.

The Energy Challenge includes multiple campaigns to reduce electricity use and heating fuel consumption county-wide. Future challenges will also be established to expand business and municipality efficiency efforts, to reduce the use of single-occupancy vehicles, and to deploy renewable energy technologies in Rutland County.
